How to use it
- Start at the top with the oldest ancestor you can name — usually the great-grandfather.
- Work down: grandfather, father, then yourself and your brothers and sisters.
- Leave anything you do not know blank. A vansavali with honest gaps is accepted; an invented name is not.
- Print it, get it attested by the gram sevak or talathi, and attach it to the caste or scrutiny file.
Questions about this tool
What is a vansavali for?
वंशावळ — a genealogy. Caste scrutiny committees use it to trace the caste claim back through the male line to a pre-1950 record, and revenue offices use it for succession and land mutation.
How many generations do I need?
For caste validity, far enough back to reach a document dated before 1950 — usually the great-grandfather. For a succession or mutation case, three generations is normally enough.
Who attests it?
The gram sevak, the talathi or the sarpanch, depending on the office. Some committees also want it notarised. Ask before you print it on stamp paper.
What if I do not know a name?
Leave it blank and say so at the office. The village records — the kotwal book, the old 7/12, the school register — often supply the missing name, and a wrong guess in a sworn document is far worse than a gap.
